Over Before it Began
Hawkish Unification Minister nominee Nam Joo Hong has withdrawn his nomination amid criticism over his uncompromising anti-North Korea stance. Nam, who, according to the Korea Times, called the 2000 inter-Korean summit declaration, “a document for North Korea’s maneuvering against South Korea,”’ and called the 2007 inter-Korean summit “a promissory bill bound to be dishonored,” also has some family members who happen to hold U.S. citizenship. The controversy here stems from the fact that having U.S. citizenship is seen by the Korean public “as a means for men to escape compulsory military service,” reports the Korea times.
No word yet on who will replace Nam.
